Director of Special Education

Job Title: Director of Special Education

Qualifications:

  • Valid L-5 certification in special education, educational leadership, or a related field. 
  • Experience in Special Education and leadership preferred.

Reports To: Superintendent
Terms of Employment: 12 months

Overview: The Director of Special Education plays a crucial role in ensuring the provision of high-quality special education services within the school system. This leadership position involves overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of special education programs to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. The Director collaborates with various stakeholders, including educators, parents, administrators, and community partners, to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure policies and programs meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  2. Stay updated on special education laws and regulations.
  3. Lead the development and improvement of special education programs.
  4. Supervise and coordinate all special education services.
  5. Oversee processes for evaluating, placing, and reassessing students.
  6. Maintain individual records for students receiving special education.
  7. Compile, manage, and file necessary reports and documents.
  8. Consult with parents of students in the special education program.
  9. Serve as a liaison between schools, community services, and educational agencies.
  10. Oversee student support teams 
  11. Manage the budget for special education programs.
  12. Work with school leaders and staff to ensure the success of students with disabilities.
  13. Support curriculum and instructional planning for students with disabilities
  14. Monitor training, support, and assessments for students with disabilities.
  15. Provide ongoing training and guidance to school personnel for implementing special education services.
  16. Communicate effectively with parents and stakeholders to enhance the educational experience for students with disabilities.
  17. All other duties as assigned 

Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated annually based on job performance and adherence to board policies.
