POSITION SPECIFICS
● This is a 180 day position. The work schedule mirrors the student calendar.
● Starting pay for this position is $12.50 per hour, paid monthly.
● This position is eligible for ERS Retirement
● This position is eligible for participation in the State Health Benefit Plan
POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The Cafe Assistant is an integral part of our Nutrition Team. They perform the core
duties involved in the preparation and serving of food, sanitation, and record keeping.
Employees in this class receive on-the-job training in the basics of food preparation,
cafeteria operation, and guest service.
The nature of the work requires sustained moderate physical effort, operation of
standard food service equipment, and continuous standing. The work is performed under
the supervision of a cafeteria manager or other cafeteria employee.
The Cafe Assistant may, for a short time, assume additional duties in the absence of the
manager.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Food preparation: The Cafe Assistant is responsible for preparing food for students and staff. This may include portioning, mixing, and chopping ingredients, as well as using
ovens and stoves to heat food.
● Quality Control: The Cafe Assistant is responsible for ensuring that we serve the best
quality meals. They accomplish this by taking and recording temperatures at the proper
times, and by evaluating food for flavor and appearance.
● Food service: The Cafe Assistant sets the serving line up for success, and serves our
students and staff with a smile! They get to know our students and make them feel
welcome.
● Cashier: The Cafe Assistant may operate the point of sale system, handle cash and
check transactions, and receive payment from students and staff.
● Cleaning: The Cafe Assistant keeps our students safe by maintaining a clean and
sanitary work station. They clean and sanitize all kitchen surfaces, utensils, trays,
equipment, and floors. This may also include sweeping floors or cleaning the dining
room as needed.
● Sanitation: The Cafe Assistant understands and follows all sanitation and personal
cleanliness practices.
● Safety: The Cafe Assistant understands and follows safety protocols like appropriate
PPE usage.
● Record keeping: The Cafe Assistant maintains accurate and timely records and reports
for food used and student accounts.
● Other Duties as Assigned - The Cafe Assistant understands that food service is a fast
paced and dynamic operation. They must be willing and prepared to perform any task
necessary to make sure we feed our students with excellence.
SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
● Ability to read and follow recipes and sanitation procedures
● Ability to communicate effectively with team members and guests
● Ability to operate standard food service equipment
● Ability to work effectively as part of a team in close quarters and under constant
deadlines
● Ability to perform tasks that involve standing, bending and twisting for extended periods
● Ability to lift (team lift as necessary) and carry heavy boxes of food materials
● Ability to maintain a positive attitude during stressful situations
● Willingness to perform whatever tasks need to be performed to ensure excellence for
our students
● Some food service experience is preferred, but not required
