School Cafe Assistant
The Café Assistant is an integral part of the Commerce City Schools Nutrition Team. This position is hired and employed through ESS and works within Commerce City Schools.
The Café Assistant performs the core duties involved in food preparation and service, sanitation, and record keeping. Employees in this position receive on-the-job training in the basics of food preparation, cafeteria operations, and guest service.
The nature of the work requires sustained moderate physical effort, operation of standard food service equipment, and continuous standing. The work is performed under the supervision of a cafeteria manager or other designated cafeteria employee.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Food Preparation: Prepare food for students and staff, including portioning, mixing, chopping ingredients, and using ovens and stoves to heat food.
Quality Control: Ensure high-quality meals by taking and recording food temperatures at appropriate times and evaluating food for flavor and appearance.
Food Service: Set up serving lines and serve students and staff with a positive, welcoming attitude.
Cashier: Operate the point-of-sale system, handle cash and check transactions, and receive payments from students and staff as needed.
Cleaning: Maintain a clean and sanitary workstation, including cleaning and sanitizing kitchen surfaces, utensils, trays, equipment, and floors.
Sanitation: Understand and follow all sanitation and personal cleanliness procedures.
Safety: Understand and follow established safety protocols, including appropriate PPE usage.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and timely records and reports related to food usage and student accounts.
Other Duties as Assigned: Perform additional tasks as needed to support the Nutrition Team and ensure excellent service to students.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and follow recipes and sanitation procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively with team members and guests.
Ability to operate standard food service equipment.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team in close quarters and under consistent deadlines.
Ability to perform tasks involving standing, bending, and twisting for extended periods.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and carry boxes of food materials.
Ability to maintain a positive attitude during stressful situations.
Willingness to perform tasks necessary to provide excellent service to students.
Previous food service experience preferred, but not required.
Employment Information: This position is filled through ESS. Individuals selected for this role will be employed by ESS and assigned to work with the Commerce City Schools Nutrition Department.
